IDEAS CITY OVERVIEW

Every two years IDEAS CITY brings thousands of people for several days of ideas, arts, culture, exhibits, panels, etc. This year featured individuals such as Lawrence Lessig (internet activist and ethicist) to Bjarke Ingels (architect tapped to protect Lower Manhattan from the next hurricane), Rosanne Haggerty (MacArthur Genius Grantee, advocate to end homelessness) to Micah White (co-creator of Occupy Wall Street and proprietor of the Boutique Activist Consultancy), culminating with an all women Mayor’s Panel.

….. and (drumroll) … our debaters!!!  This year our debaters participated in our first “Rhetoric in the Ring Public Debate!”

Our students had the opportunity to debate in a boxing ring!  Topics included the death penalty, smart technology, congressional term limits, and fracking.  Debates were 30 minutes each followed by audience questioning.  Thank you so much for the schools, teachers, students and families who participated.  Huge thanks to coaches Mr. Beattie (PS 161), Ms. Katz (One World), and Ms. Haynes (William Grady HS).  Another huge thanks to the New Museum for making everything happen! And final shout out for all the incredible Great Debaters who participated!!   Click here for Photo Album!
